Anything more than $140/night in Punta Cana is too much.
Raising prices to the cost of resorts in the 1st world or more is a recipe for ruining the whole tourism industry
For an AI anything more than $140 a night is too much? What are you using as a comparison or rather how are you coming to that amount? How is it a recipe for ruining the whole tourism industry? Punta Cana while in the DR is quite a bit different than the rest of the DR.

These prices are for double rooms. So two people directly on the beach with all food and beverage included mean nothing? Millions of tourists disagree with this assessment......................

Europe
It's May holiday in Europe at the moment, which might explain the high prices (based on tourists)

Not sure why CB thinks an AI in Punta Cana should not cost more than $140.00 a night. $140.00 a night would not cover the cost of a hotel in Santo Domingo, drinks and food. At least the hotels I am familiar with.

$140 a person is not a cheapie cheapie deal. $1,000 a night is ridiculous. I can stay in San Francisco in a 5-star hotel and eat in elegant restaurants for 2 people for far less and have enough money for taxis and a round of golf

The whole point of an Ai is to offer get-away vacations for tourists. It does not compare to the capital where there are many business visitors in a more pricey real estate environment.
Anything north of $150/night per person and the whole appeal of DR fades. The beaches aren't something you can't find elsewhere

Ok, thanks, you clarified your price was based per person. Based on 2 people at $150 each, that would be $300 per night. That is about average for a lower mid-range resort, more or less, especially during the off-season. $1000.00 a night, those resorts cater to a different type of tourist, not your average tourist. Some are willing to pay more for a better resort. I do not think it affects the appeal of the DR at all. Just the opposite, it gives travelers a better range of resorts at different price ranges. For example, when we would take all the kids in the family on a quick weekend trip to Punta Cana, we would stay at more of a mid-priced resort. When it was an adult trip, we would stay at a higher priced resort.
