I find it extremely weird that you find it so weird to have locked cabinets. Seems quite common and a great idea so they don't ruin things.
We just hide our stuff we don't want her to ruin, that works most of the time but seems smarter to just have 1 cabinet for all that stuff. We forget where we hide things!!

sorry, but i cant agree.
what kinda people are your Frens where such is quiet Common?
in my good 20 years on the Isle i did never met anybody who would lock kittchen stuff or such away.
never found such in germany neither.

My MIL has a locked closet in her bedroom where she locks anything she doesn't want the maid to have access to. My wife's cousin in Santo Domingo has a padlock on her landline telephone. Most Dominicans have locks on bedroom doors....etc. Both the maid and my MIL use can openers for opening cans.
They have good stainless steel cooking pots and frying pans which seem to hold up to the hard use. Our maid is a distant relative and she hasn't stolen anything. My MIL would know as she knows where and how many of everything in the house. Guess we are lucky.

Yes i know he was referring to that but he goes on in previous posts about no need for locked cupboards which i find EXTREMELY weird to not understand why this is needed here!

there is nothing to understand about.
my own lifetime experience with people from around the globe, is simply that i see zero need to lock away simple things in my own house.
me too, i have stuff i don't wanna get touched by certain persons or anybody at all, the poeple who frequent our house know well where they are allowed and where they have to keep their fingers away.
i don't even lock away the firearms or money.
there are simply cabinets in the house which are "private", that means no maid nor visitor touches their unlocked doorhandles.
even my 4 years old daughter understands and respects such "specific terrain".
of course the firearms are no reachable by the lil one, in case i am not in the house.

"Maids"????????????????????????

You mean "Familia"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

"EXCEPT",...Bob's!!!!!!!!!! :lick::lick::lick::lick::lick::lick::lick::lick:

My wife's family, at least the ones that come to her house are considered honest by my MIL. The ones she doesn't trust she lets me know to get an eye on my stuff. If I forget my cellphone or camera on the table she puts it in her bedroom until I show up looking for it. The maid will give it to Melania if she notices it. I feel sorry for you if you are surrounded by thieves in your family. I'm not, thankfully.

You all keep saying,..."It's The MAID"!!!!!!!!!
"BULL$HIT"!!!!!

I can be the maid, but more likely it's your own extended family, and/or visitors!!!!!!

I have been in dozens of poor Dominican's homes, they have never had, or ever will have a maid, YET, there are locks on kitchen pantries/ cupboards, and EVEN refrigerators, bedroom doors, clothes closets, and chests-of-drawers.
That ain't to keep out any "Maids"!!!
Funny part is, most of the locks have been busted/broken off by the owners themselves.
Yet another Dominican trait is, they lose the keys to EVERYTHING!!!!!!

THEY, "Can't Win" Either!!!!!!

people so less trustworthy, that i couldn't leave my Nikon or not even the cellphone on a table in my own house,
well,
such people would not be invited to my house,
it does not matter if they would be family of my wife or what so ever.
I choose who is welcome,
hence i do not need to hide my cellphone, camera, purse etc in my own house.
i could not spend a day or afternoon in my own house, surrounded by "people/family" whom are known that they just wait for the right chance to steal something, unbelievable.

My house has no access to anyone but my MIL's where we eat most meals has easy access and she has lived in the same house for 30 plus years and she has a tendency to leave the door unlocked while she's in the kitchen in the back. The majority of people will not enter and call from outside but she occasionally has visitors that she doesn't trust to much but she's too polite to say so.

Come on peeps, we know nothing will ever change.

I tell my friend last night to order medium pizza with pepperoni cause I could not find Bella Italia Pizzeria and we settled for La Pizza on Churchill. Well my friend knows I am footing the bill for the meal for her and her sister plus myself. So what she do? Order the grande pizza with all kind of garbage on it. At least it didn't have corn and just as I expected one of the worst pizzas I ever tasted.

But us men seem to forget these things when the lights go dim and your eyes are looking at one sweet, good looking caramel lady............

Yes, I get the open the pack of cold cuts and cheese and don't bother to seal it back. One milk is open but in the back of the frig so open a new one. Open a can of soda, take a sip and let it sit on the counter till next year.

But once in a blue moon you find a chica that makes the bed before you can shave. Has the mop and broom going hundred miles an hour. Frig is clean, food put away............... But don't hold your breath cause in my experience they are few and far between.

Sounds like a case of jealously. My wife and I don't have a maid. We have a cleaning lady that comes in one afternoon a week. She is a client that cleans in lieu of cash payment for her child's schooling. My wife has known her since she was born and knows her family well. Everyone in a small town knows who the thieves are, and no it isn't every Dominican.

ROTFLMAO

I have rented two apartments here. First apartment brand spanking new and a lock on every door. I am like what the heck I need a lock and key for on the bathroom door. Second apartment, same thing lock on every door but half the keys are lost. So I just go well when the day comes and I lock myself out of one of the bathrooms or laundry I just call the apartment manager and say, ain't my fault, send someone over to open the door.

I still can't figure out why you would need a lock and key on the bathroom door when the lady friends I see most times don't even bother to close the bathroom door..........

Thank god I have one of those five years running. She's not only beautiful but runs my business and the household to my standards. Yes even though there are two state of the art can openers here she use the knife. That's my only complaint so I puchase those 200 pesos knives at Iberia 5 at a time. Live is good!!!!!

Maybe you can order a gross of knives from the $1 store in USA. LOL, but I hear you.

Glad you got a winner. Thing with me I am NOT handing over a set of keys to my crib. I will continue to deal with the knucklehead chicas and enjoy my remaining years on this planet.

Something is not kosher!

You want fun and games? Try explaining to a Dominican maid how to keep a kitchen kosher: meat and milk utensils, dishes, pots, pans, silverware separate at all times. Not washed together. Not used together. Not stored together. And you explain it every day for 3 years and still find migrated silverware.

And don't even get me started about Passover. The only thing I can do is to literally put crime scene tape around the kitchen for that week. You may think I am kidding. I am not.

Dominicans KNOW that there are ghosts and black magic.
Kosher seems like gringo voodoo, which everyone knows does not work.
Consequently Kosher escapes Dominican logic.....go figure.

I see that most who live in the DR have not been able to understand (yet) that the majority
which happen to be the poor cannot possibly store food or other necessities because they
live on a day to day basis. There is no such thing as storing for a rainy day simply because
they do not have the resources.

But of course if gringo is there to provide for all their necessities, why worry? :classic:
