An immigrant could be an individual who, out of necessity, makes the move to provide a better way of life for him/herself and or the family or to escape persecution in his/her own country.

However, we shouldn't forget about the waves of European immigrants who fled to the Americas in order to achieve a better way of life for themselves and their families and, in some cases, persecution.
They may have chosen to relocate, but their choice was rooted in need.
