Great points to consider - thank you all. To clarify - I am not in reasonable walking distance of anything. I have been using the public taxis, not the gua guas - but they only run along the main road. Schlupping groceries is not very easy. I had considered a small motorbike but..... looks like planned suicide to me. Hiring a private taxi?? I thought they were like $35 one way? If I were to buy a used car with the help of a Dominican friend in Moca from a dealer do I still need a lawyer?

Also, does anyone possibly know of an individual willing to rent a small vehicle to a responsible individual?

nobody gives good discounts for renting a car by the month. you are better off buying, check the boards at the supermarket go to Moca, get the car checked out by one of the decent mechanic's in town, buy a toyota, it will sell again, if you do some shopping the car will not go down too much in value. i bought a 1996 rav4 5 yrs ago at 220k and its worth 185k today.
