Nearly 500 New Yorkers — including 49 pregnant women — have tested positive for the Zika *virus, a more than tenfold increase since April, city officials said *Tuesday.

Five of the 483 victims contracted the virus through sex.

The others are believed to have been infected from mosquito bites while traveling outside the United States — a majority in the Dominican Republic.

I put it here because 1) a lot of the people contracted it in the DR, and 2) you people in NY better be careful who you have sex with, LOL!

that was reported in dominican press few weeks ago. made me wonder how many of those new yorkers who contracted the disease in DR are dominicans or american-dominican. that is, they travel to DR on regular basis rather than just one off holiday thing.

another update on zika front: 3 cases of microcephaly registered in DR are connected to zika virus infection. the children were born in SD, DN and independencia province. mothers did not recount having zika but clinical history of one of them registered rash on the stomach (rash is one of the zika symptoms).

short update on zika: 10 cases of microcephaly connected to the disease confirmed, 18 more are waiting for the results; also, there are 274 cases of SGB.
in addition, cholera cases are on the rise as well, with 20 deaths this year so far.
