37 Haitians sought political asylum

The Jesuit Refugee Services office in Santo Domingo reports that 37 Haitian nationals have sought political asylum in the DR so far this year. The refugees are mainly political leaders and journalists critical of the Aristide government. El Caribe reports that on 14 February this year, four journalists from three Haitian radio stations crossed into the Dominican Republic, fleeing the persecution of the so-called ‘Cannibal Army’ said to be responsible for the violence in the northern town of Gonaives last August. Among the four was the president of the Haitian Journalists’ Association, Joseph Guyler Delva.
