The Ministry of Public Works and the Concesionaria Dominicana de Autopistas y Carreteras, which holds a governmental concession to maintain the Las Americas highway, announced that the tunnel under the thoroughfare would be closed until Friday 11 April so that maintenance works may take place. The tunnel was opened on 15 August 2000, since which time it has not seen any long closures for upkeep.
