Family violence in the public eye

The researcher and health specialist for the International Center for Research of Women, Dinys Luciano, told reporters yesterday that the investment made by the Dominican government to programs designed to assist victims of domestic violence is ?insignificant?, as she called for much larger funding to help those in dangerous familial situations. In 2002, there were 131 fatalities among the more than 4,000 women were hurt by physical aggression. Luciano is the facilitator for the workshop called ?Public Policy: Family Violence and National Budgets?, organized by the Aquelarre Support Center and under the auspices of the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF). According to her, the Ministry of Public Health only assigned US$15,000 to matters of family violence last year.
