President Hipolito Mejia sent to the Senate a bill that would offer government import tax exemptions for mayors and deputy mayors who purchase luxury vehicles. Most of the mayors and deputy mayors are members of the ruling PRD party that Dominicans voted against in the 2004 election. There are no limits contained in the bill to regulate these imports, according to the story in Diario Libre.
