Economist Frederic Emam Zade alerts on rumors circulating regarding the sale of assets of autonomous government entities, which do not require Congressional approval. He said the Corporacion de Fomento Industrial (CFI), which manages government free zone industrial free zone plants, should clarify whether or not they have up for sale 60,000 square meters of industrial plants at RD$1,000 per meter, which would be way below market value. Rumors indicate that the plan is to sell this space to gain revenues of RD$6 billion before 16 August. He also said the State Sugar Council (CEA) and other governmental departments need to provide details on real estate transactions already conducted or in process to avoid future judicial action.
Emam Zade recalled that during the interim between the PRD government of Salvador Jorge Blanco and the PRSC government of Joaquin Balaguer in 1986, several thousand government vehicles were sold to government officials who obtained them for ridiculous prices. He said that those in power at the end of Jorge Blanco?s government also removed office equipment, works of art and objects of value from government offices, as well as important government documents.
