Victor Cespedes, the Attorney General of the Mejia administration, announced that he would release another 500 inmates from Dominican jails. These get-out-of-jail-free cards excuse their recipients from their entire sentence. The Mejia government has been the subject of controversy for having released convicted murderers and drug traffickers. With the announced 500 new releases, Cespedes would have a new record in pardons, estimated at approximately 2,500, as reported in Hoy newspaper.
Cespedes said that as a result of his efforts, there are only 420 women in jail. He said that when he completes his term on 16 August there should only be 200 women remaining in Dominican jails, down from 500 women.
Cespedes announced that among those being considered for release is Yennis Caldera, who has a case pending for the trafficking of two kilos of heroine.
