Fernandez meets Chavez

President-elect Leonel Fernandez met with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in Caracas yesterday. They focused on formulas to improve conditions under which Venezuela sells its petroleum to the DR. Fernandez told journalists that they spoke primarily about the San Jose Accord that governs sales of Venezuelan crude to the DR. The DR sources most of its supply from Venezuela.

Diplomatic ties between Venezuela and the DR had always been good, until Hugo Chavez denounced the complacency of the Mejia administration with regards to his political foe, Carlos Andres Perez, a resident of the DR. Chavez said that Perez was conspiring against him from Dominican soil.

Fernandez said that Venezuelan-DR relations had already improved in recent months, and he committed to strengthening the ties during his new administration.
