Teeing off on the Malecon?

Three companies ? two foreign and one Dominican ? have each declared an interest in sponsoring the construction of a golf course along Santo Domingo?s ocean-fronting boulevard, the Malecon. The parties have submitted their proposals to the National District?s municipal authorities.

The city government?s secretary, Domingo Contreras, explained that the project outlines were presented by representatives of a Korean and an Argentine company. He mentioned that the Casa de Espana, the Spanish cultural center in Santo Domingo, had also expressed a desire to sponsor part of the Litoral Sur area.

According to the report in Hoy, the golf course would be located opposite the Metaldom locale and the private companies would provide all the resources to install the sports facility.

Meanwhile, the beautification effort at the Malecon continues, with 60 workers and 20 trucks enlisted daily to pick up garbage, prune trees and rake leaves of the various plants found there. Workers yesterday concentrated specifically on the small bit of beach in front of El Vesuvio restaurant. Jose Miguel Martinez, who is in charge of the clean-up campaign, says that they will remain working there until the area has been completely cleaned up.

National District officials are aiming to attain certain sanitary standards for the area before selecting the company that will oversee its new function.
