The Coalition of Protected Areas has requested that the Ministry of Environment ban construction activity in the National Park of the East until the Supreme Court of Justice has ruled on the legitimacy of the new Law 202-04 on Sectoral Protected Areas. The Coalition has protested the legality of the law that allows construction of resorts within previously protected parklands. The law legalized the at-the-time illegal purchase of property in the protected park area made by Globalia, the parent company of Air Europa that flies to the DR from Spain. El Caribe reports that yesterday, Globalia representatives appeared at the Park of the East to demolish the guards? station that is located within the park limits. Globalia is aiming to build a 1,200-room resort within the park?s boundaries. Globalia requested written permission from Environment Minister Frank Moya Pons ?to demolish the guard house built by the ministry within our property.?
