In 2019, the DR sent 324,000 tons of organic cacao and organic bananas to the European Union countries. The announcement was made by Dominican ambassador to the EU, Anibal de Castro, as reported in Listin Diario. The DR is ranked third overall by the EU in its global organic imports. The DR has bypassed Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Mexico.
The DR ambassador to the European Union explained that Europeans are consuming more organic produce as they seek a healthier lifestyle and a better environment. “Of course, this represents a great opportunity for Dominican exporters,” he said.
According to the trade department of the EU Embassy in Brussels, the continued positioning of Dominican organic products in the coming years will depend on the capacity of agricultural cooperatives and associations to adapt to both the new “From the Farm to the Table” strategy of the European bloc and the new European organic produce law.
