The Epidemiology Department of the Ministry of Public Health Bulletin #173 numbers show less persons are testing positive for Covid-19. For Bulletin #173, 2,493 first time tests patients were tested with a 9.35% positivity rate. The positivity rate over the past four weeks is still at 27.42%. The cumulative incidence continues to rise, indicating restrictive measures and actions to combat the disease need to continue.
As per Bulletin #173, with the deadline of 7 September 2020, 233 new confirmed cases are reported. This is half of the cases reported in the previous bulletin. The Ministry of Public Health has registered 100,131 confirmed cases since the first case on 1 March 2020. The PCR testing is 38,296 tests per million inhabitants. The number of deaths is 1,889, including five deaths in the past 24 hours of the bulletin. The fatality rate is 1.89% over the past four weeks.
The Ministry of Public Health reports 27% of the total available hospital beds for Covid-19 patients (3,566). The occupancy of intensive care units for Covid-19 is now at 44% of the 569 available units.
The new government in the Dominican Republic has taken on the challenge to significantly increase the number of testing in the country to 7,000 per day as part of the national strategy to combat the spread of the disease. Yet this has not happened yet. Bulletin #173 reveals that the average testing is at 3,349 PCR confirmed case tests. The tally of deaths is now 1,889, including one new registered death for the past 24 hours. The Ministry of Public Health is now distinguishing between deaths occurring within the past four weeks and the deaths occurring within 24 hours of the report.
The official cumulative incidence of the disease per 100,000 inhabitants as per confirmed PCR tests is highest in the National District and these top 10 provinces: National District (2,684), Pedernales (1,240), Santiago (1,081), La Altagracia (1,015), Sánchez Ramírez (948), La Vega (888), Duarte (830, La Romana (780), Azua (773), Maria Trinidad Sánchez (771) and Barahona (751). Santo Domingo province with 723 is in 12th place in the incidence of the disease per 100,000 inhabitants.
The Epidemiological Bulletin lists the positivity rate in the National District (capital city) at 22% and in the Santo Domingo province at 26%. As of Bulletin #173, the top five provinces with the highest positivity rates are: Dajabón (64%), Baoruco (55%), San Jose de Ocoa (55%), Montecristi (46%) and Barahona (46%).

As of Monday, 7 September 2020 at 6pm, the deadline for Bulletin #173, the most confirmed cases were located in urban areas where most of the tests are carried out. The National District (28,009) and the Santo Domingo province (21,023) are 50% of the 99,898 confirmed cases nationwide.
Other provinces with more than 500 confirmed cases are: Santiago (11,301), San Cristobal (3,743), La Vega (3,655), La Altagracia (3,589), Duarte (2,481), La Romana (2,127), Puerto Plata (1,848), Azua (1,719), Espaillat (1,640), San Juan de la Maguana (1,550), San Pedro de Macoris (1,482), Sánchez Ramírez (1,437), Barahona (1,420), Monseñor Nouel (1,115), Maria Trinidad Sanchez (1,088) and Peravia (1,055). The National District, province of Santo Domingo and these 16 provinces of 32 make up more than 90% of the confirmed cases nationwide.
Where and how much testing determines the reported new cases. Testing is still inconsistent. The most new allocated cases reported for the 6 September update deadline are: Santo Domingo (59), Santiago (59), Duarte (35), National District (30), La Altagracia (12) and La Romana (10).
Haiti reports 8,376 confirmed cases and 214 deaths, for the 7 September 2020 deadline.
In the Americas, the Dominican Republic is now ranked 11th in confirmed cases after the United States, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Canada, Bolivia and Ecuador.
