Tourism Minister David Collado was in Puerto Plata on 19 September 2021 for the official launching of Cabarete in Puerto Plata as the capital of wind and surf.

The minister guaranteed government support to youth and water sports and the promotion of Cabarate as a water sports destination at the world level.

Cabarete Mayor Freddy Cruz read the Municipal Resolution 08-21 that launches the Wind and Surf City.

“We are going to work together, to support all the tournaments that are going to be held in this municipality and we will make a calendar of actions to work together,” Collado assured those in attending.

Collado defined Cabarete as a “wild, beautiful, free, independent and bohemian destination.” He said government and private sector would work together to encourage this type of tourism.

He said the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) will sponsor the Master Surf event, which will be coordinated by surfer Ricardo Ripoll. The government recently sponsored the traditional international Master of The Ocean tournament held every year in Playa Encuentro, the west end of Cabarete beach.

Collado also announced the government would sponsor an award ceremony with all the outstanding surfers and athletes of these disciplines. President Luis Abinader would attend the event.

“We are working shoulder to shoulder with Mitur to strengthen foreign investments, progress and development of this town”, said Mayor Cruz after the declaration.

During the activity, the entrepreneurship and talent of surfing athletes Adeurys Cornielle and Manuel Selman, natives of Cabarete and world champions in the disciplines of waves and wind, was recognized.

The meeting was also attended by the Mitur, the vice ministers of Destination Management, Patricia Mejía and Tammy Reynoso of Tourism Promotion and Development; the regional director Stephanie Kfouri and the director of the Tourism Police (Politur), General Minoru Matsunaga.
