122 traffic accidents over the Christmas holidays

The Center for Emergency Operations (COE) reported 14 deaths over the Christmas holidays, including nine outside the realm of the safe Christmas operation that includes traffic accidents, food alcohol and food intoxication. This is 45% less than the stats for 2019, the pre-pandemic year.

The COE reported 122 traffic accidents, with 87 of these involving motorcycle drivers. 301 persons were intoxicated by alcohol and 101 for food poisoning.

The most accidents took place in the National District, Santo Domingo province, Santiago, Duarte (San Francisco de Macorís) and San Cristobal.

The COE reported that 4,687 roadside assists were provided and 2,657 medical emergency care assists during the 24 December-25 December holiday peak period.

COE explained that more than two million people left cities and towns to meet with their relatives and friends and enjoy a Christmas holiday at hotels and lodgings.

The New Year prevention operation will be held from Thursday, 30 December at 2pm to Saturday, 1 January at 6pm.
