The Dominican Republic women’s soccer team surprisingly made the group stage in the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup that is being played from 17 February to 10 March 2024.
The DR defeated Guyana 1-0 in the preliminary round on 17 February at Dignity Health Sports Park Track and Field Stadium in Carson, California, USA and together with Puerto Rico and El Salvador advanced to the group stage.
The DR will now open in Group A playing the United States team on Tuesday, 20 February.
Comprised of the top teams from Concacaf along with the four invitees from Conmebol, the W Gold Cup features four teams ranked in the Top 25 in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings in the USA (#2), Canada (#10), Brazil (#11) and Colombia (#23).
The 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup will be played in four venues across the United States, with matches being played at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif., Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, Shell Energy Stadium in Houston and BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.
Group A, comprised of the USA, Argentina, Mexico and the Dominican Republic will be played at Dignity Health Sports Park. Group B, which features Brazil, Colombia, Panama and Puerto Rico will play all its group matches at Snapdragon Stadium. Canada, Costa Rica, Paraguay and El Salvador make up Group C, which will play its group games at Shell Energy Stadium. These matches will be played from 20 to 28 February.
The 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup is disputed among 12 teams from two Confederations, Concacaf and Conmebol, and includes seven teams that participated in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and four that will partake in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
After round-robin play, the winners of each group, along with the runners-up and the two best third-place finishers, will advance to the Knockout Stage. The Quarterfinals will be held at BMO Stadium on 2 and 3 March, followed by the Semifinals and Final at Snapdragon Stadium on 6 to 10 March, respectively.
Soccer is an emerging sport in the Dominican Republic with the men’s team qualifying to participate in the Paris Olympics. The U17 Girls World Cup will be held this 2024 in the Dominican Republic.
