Brugal and Barcelo rum companies received the prestigious Denomination of Origin (DO) status that will enable their brands to carry the DO label, a guarantee of quality and authenticity.
The designation protects geographical status and refers to products specific to a particular region or town, which convey a particular quality or characteristic of the designated area. The designation impacts the rums recognition and how they are valued internationally.
In the case of rum, the designation ensures the product comes from a certain region, but also that it has been produced according to certain traditional standards and methods.
For the occasion President Luis Abinader and Industry & Commerce Minister Victor (Ito) Bisono welcomed the rum executives at the Presidential Palace and delivered the Denomination of Origin Dominican that guarantees the authenticity, credibility and unique characteristics in aroma, taste and color of Dominican rums.
The Dominican Association of Rum Producers had applied for the distinction in 2014. Dominican rum is exported to more than 90 countries.
The DO is similar to that awarded France for champagne and Mexico for tequila.
In the case of the Dominican Republic, the DO states that only local sugarcane juice and molasses can be used for rum production. It also stipulates that all the production must take place in the Dominican Republic. Dominican rum is aged in oak barrels.
Brugal and Barcelo produce several rums, with prices varying for the years aged. Brugal, for instance as the 12-year old Brugal Siglo de Oro, or the 30-years Brugal Unico. But its Brugal Extra Viejo is super smooth and very popular in the Dominican Republic.
Barcelo is famous for its Barcelo Imperial line of rums. The Barceló Imperial was launched 40 years ago.
Both companies offer tours of their installations for those who want to learn more about what makes a good rum. Barceló has a museum in San Pedro de Macoris and Brugal is based in Puerto Plata.
