Fuerza Pueblo puts Rafael Paz to work on the capital city campaign

Former executive vice president of the National Business Council (Conep) Rafael Paz had sought to be chosen the Fuerza del Pueblo (People’s Force) candidate to mayor for the National District. An alliance between the Dominican Liberation Party and the People’s Force party would instead back Domingo Contreras instead.

Then, Rafael Paz sought to get on the party list for deputy. But the People’s Force had already chosen the method of polls and Paz did not make it in this method. Nevertheless, the party sought to override the results of the survey, to which the Superior Electoral Board (TSE) ruled a big “no.” The party sought Andy Morales, the winner of the seat in the party poll, to step aside. He didn’t. Eventually, the JCE would deem valid the TSE decision and not accept the candidacy of Rafael Paz, despite the support of former President Leonel Fernandez to his candidacy.

Finally, two weeks to go before the presidential and congressional election on 19 May 2024, the People’s Force named Rafael Paz to preside and coordinate the party’s National District campaign. He replaces 84-year old former Vice President Rafael Alburquerque. Paz’s job is to motivate followers of former three-term President Leonel Fernandez to go to vote for the father and his son Omar Fernandez, who is running for senator, and he is also responsible to motivate for Andy Morales and other FP candidates for deputy.

Rafael Paz in the 2020 congressional elections sought to win the National District senatorial seat only to be defeated by Faride Raful of the Modern Revolutionary Party. Raful had sought to be reelected, but declined in favor of former presidential candidate for Alianza Pais minority party, Guillermo Moreno.
