The new Senate that begins its four-year term on 16 August 2024 will have the task of voting to choose new members or confirm the present members of the Central Electoral Board. The current members of the JCE were chosen in the Senate vote on 4 November 2020.
With the declaration of the winners of the presidential and congressional elections last May, the Central Electoral Board (JCE) and its plenary members have completed the task of organizing the 2024 presidential, legislative and municipal elections.
Overall, the perception is that the JCE rose to the challenges and were successful in the organization of the elections in 2024.
The current JCE plenary is made up by presiding member Román Jáquez Liranzo and the other members Rafael Armando Vallejo Santelises, Dolores Altagracia Fernández, Patricia Lorenzo and Sami Rafael Chami Isa could be confirmed for another four years or individually replaced.
As established in the 2015 Constitution, the Senate has a period of 60 days to assess the five full members of the plenary and their alternates. Approval of the new members needs two-thirds of the membership of the Senate.
The ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) won all but three of the seats in the Senate in the 19 May 2024 election and thus has the upper hand in deciding the members of the JCE plenary under the guidelines of Electoral Regime Law 20-23.
As reported in Listin Diario, the JCE consumed 95% of their entire annual budget for the election of the winners of 4,117 positions in the first half of the year. These cost taxpayers RD$8.37 billion.
The JCE is also in charge of the civil registry in the Dominican Republic. The JCE has announced the issuing of new identity and voting cards for this year.
