Attorney General Miriam German Brito’s term-closing remarks

Attorney General Miriam German Brito presented a summary of her achievements and the challenges she has tackled since being named to the position on 16 August 2020. She took over the Attorney General Office (PGR) from her predecessor, Jean Alain Rodriguez, who had accused her of corruption when she sat for confirmation as a judge for the Penal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice. Rodriguez is now being tried for major corruption in his term at the PGR.

On 16 August 2020, at the start of his term President Luis Abinader had announced the appointment of the removed Penal Court judge German Brito for Attorney General in his attempt to ensure an independent Attorney General Office.

In her remarks on 23 July 2024, German Brito reflected on her challenging four-year tenure that she described as one marked by subtle internal attacks and criticisms. She noted that she neither won nor lost, and departs with peace of mind.

She emphasized her approach of allowing each district attorney to operate within their jurisdiction, though acknowledging disagreements with some that eventually resulted in agreements on “some” issues while failing to reconcile on “others.”

German Brito continued with most of the district attorneys she inherited from her predecessor, many who criticics said were handpicked by her predecessor Jean Alain Rodriguez.

German Brito asserted she did not yield to pressure from sectors viewing justice as a game of individual interests rather than a sacred calling. She highlighted that her principles always prevailed, as reported in Listin Diario’s coverage on the presentation of her wrapup on her four years in the position that will end with the announcement of the country’s next choice for attorney general by reelected President Abinader.
