Capotillo’s Escuela Salomé Ureña gets a major sports facility

President Luis Abinader was in Capotillo, a low-income barrio, to inaugurate the covered sports facility at Escuela Salomé Ureña on Saturday, 28 July 2024. The National Institute of Physical Education (Inefi) is responsible for the sports center, the first of its kind in the Ensanche Capotillo neighborhood. The courts will benefit students, athletes and also residents in the area.

An Inefi press release explains that the new facility aims to provide a safe and well-equipped space for the 1,074 students of the school and local athletes, fostering a healthy lifestyle from a young age.

Alberto Rodríguez Mella, director of Inefi, emphasized that the modern covered structure will serve as a model for the educational system. The facility includes high-quality basketball hoops, ventilation systems, restrooms with showers, bleachers, an auditorium, and a state-of-the-art scoreboard, marking the first time such equipment has been installed in a school gymnasium.

“Our goal is to use sports to instill values such as teamwork, discipline, respect, and perseverance,” Rodríguez Mella stated. “These objectives align with Inefi’s mission to promote and develop sports and physical education in schools, contributing to the overall well-being and development of students.”

The construction cost over RD$31 million and includes a covered court suitable for basketball, volleyball, and futsal, as well as restrooms, showers, and an air-conditioned event hall.

Rodríguez Mella also urged the Capotillo community to take care of the new facility.
