A tropical wave moving across the country, combined with an upper-level trough, is bringing cloudy skies, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, 3 September 2024.
The National Weather Institute (Indomet) reports that several provinces remain under weather alerts as the atmospheric systems intensify throughout the day. Residents in Samaná, María Trinidad Sánchez, Santiago, La Vega, San Juan de la Maguana, Greater Santo Domingo and other areas can expect moderate to heavy downpours accompanied by lightning and strong winds. These conditions are forecast to persist into the night.
By Wednesday, 4 September 2024, the weather systems will shift, bringing heavy showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to Pedernales, Barahona, Independencia, Peravia, San Cristóbal, Greater Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macorís, and La Romana during the morning hours. As the day progresses, the affected areas will expand to include Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, Monseñor Nouel, San José de Ocoa, La Vega, and Duarte provinces.
Meanwhile, Indomet reports that a tropical wave south of Puerto Rico is being monitored for potential development, although the chances remain low for the next 48 hours. Another tropical wave emerging from Africa is also being watched, with a 10% chance of formation in the next 24 hours.
Greater Santo Domingo is expected to experience cloudy skies with rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. Temperatures are forecast to range between 23°C and 25°C, with highs reaching between 31°C and 33°C.
By Thursday, 5 September, the impact of the tropical wave is expected to diminish, leading to a decrease in rainfall. However, the upper-level trough and local weather conditions may still produce scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in the northern, northeastern, southern coastal, and the Central Mountain Range regions.
