Gridlock worsens on Duarte Highway amid ongoing construction

Drivers using the Km 9 intersection in northern Santo Domingo need to set aside more time or try to schedule travel in the very early morning or at night to avoid the major traffic jams due to major road construction at the site.

Noticias SIN reported on how commuters faced significant traffic congestion on the Duarte Highway on Wednesday, 4 September 2024 as construction work continues at Kilometer 9. The situation on Wednesday was aggravated by a large truck that became stuck under an underpass on John F. Kennedy Avenue, adding to the travel woes of motorists and public transportation users.

Bus drivers serving the Los Alcarrizos, Pedro Brand, and Los Girasoles areas reported increased fuel costs due to the extended travel times caused by the construction projects.

The Km 9 intersection is under major construction to incorporate 14 lanes and several roadworks connecting to the south and northeast bypasses.

Furthermore, Diario Libre reports that traffic jams in the city have worsened due to blackouts that affect the operation of the traffic lights at key avenues.
