Two Dominican students have brought home bronze medals from the 39th Ibero-American Mathematics Olympiad (OIM) held at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés in Tarija, Bolivia from 19 to 25 September 2024.
Enmanuel Starlin Germosén De los Santos, from the Instituto Politécnico de Haina, and Emil Alejandro Peralta Cabrera, from the Colegio Inmaculada Concepción, emerged victorious after competing against students from over 20 Ibero-American countries.
The OIM, an annual event targeting students under 18, aims to promote the study of mathematics and foster opportunities for educational exchange among students and teachers.
Joining Germosén and Peralta on the Dominican team were Ananda María Vélez Pérez and Juan Ignacio Melo Abreu.
The Ministry of Education sponsored the trip. The students received intensive mathematics preparation, financial support for the trip to Bolivia, and accommodations. This, combined with their dedication and classroom learning, contributed to their success, the Ministry of Education reports.
Held since 1985, the OIM brings together students from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Venezuela, Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
