Dominicans urged to get flu shots amidst rising cases

Health officials are urging all Dominicans to get vaccinated against the influenza virus as cases continue to rise. Dr. José Brea del Castillo, president of the Dominican Society of Vaccinology, stressed the importance of vaccination, especially given the potential severity of the flu.

“The flu can be deadly,” warned Dr. Brea del Castillo. “It’s crucial to get vaccinated, especially now that we’re seeing an uptick in cases in the region, including the United States and Canada. With the influx of tourists, the risk of a local outbreak is heightened.”

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), between 10% and 15% of the population is affected by the flu each year. Complications from the flu can include pneumonia, requiring hospitalization or even intensive care.

“Even healthy individuals can experience severe symptoms,” Dr. Brea del Castillo explained. “That’s why it’s so important for everyone, from infants to the elderly, to get vaccinated.”

Individuals at higher risk of complications from the flu, such as the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with underlying health conditions, are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated.

“People with chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or lung disease are particularly vulnerable,” said Dr. Brea del Castillo. “Even if you’re generally healthy, getting vaccinated can help protect your community.”

The Ministry of Health has already launched a vaccination campaign targeting vulnerable populations. The vaccine is effective against both influenza A and B.
