Julia Sánchez is the new United Nations Resident Coordinator for the Dominican Republic. She formally presented her credentials to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, 23 October 2024. She is appointed as the Dominican Republic celebrates 50 years working with the United Nations Development Program.
Sánchez, a Peruvian national, was received by Deputy Minister of Multilateral Foreign Policy Rubén Silié on behalf of Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez.
“The United Nations system has been an active and very supportive companion for us,” Silié remarked. “I always say that the development and institutional modernization of the Dominican Republic owes much to the support we have received from the UN through its agencies, funds, and programs.”
For her part, Sánchez expressed her enthusiasm for taking on the role of Resident Coordinator in the Dominican Republic. “I have strong ties to this country, where I lived for eight years during my childhood with my family,” she said. “It is a great honor for me to join the UN team to contribute to the country’s sustainable development at a time of so many opportunities for cooperation and collaboration.”
Both the Dominican government and the UN reaffirmed their commitment to the country’s sustainable development, as outlined in their 2023-2027 cooperation framework.
As the UN Secretary-General’s representative in the Dominican Republic, the Resident Coordinator is responsible for leading and coordinating the work of all UN agencies, funds, and programs. This ensures a coordinated, effective, and comprehensive response to the government’s priorities.
Sánchez brings over 25 years of experience in development cooperation and humanitarian action to her new position. She holds a master’s degree in Economics and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Economics from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Previously, she served as the Secretary-General of ActionAid International and has held leadership roles in various international organizations.
