The pilot test of using breathalyzers on those driving on the Av. Winston Churchill on Friday, 25 October 2024 in the evening didn’t reveal anything surprising. The National Transit Institute (Intrant) issued a press release revealing that 20% of those tested had levels of alcohol below those allowed for drivers. 10% tested in the drunk level.
In the press release, Intrant stated:
“Of the 177 drivers stopped at a checkpoint on Winston Churchill Avenue in Santo Domingo, 35 tested positive for alcohol, and 16 were found to be legally intoxicated. Among those checked, 172 were operating four-wheeled vehicles while five were on motorcycles.
New Intrant executive director Milton Morrison expressed concern over the results of this pilot operation. He stated that the high number of drivers found to be under the influence of alcohol is “a cause for alarm.”
Winston Churchill Avenue itself, as is normal all over the country, has several stores selling liquor to the general public. There has yet to be the political will to put a stop to the selling of alcohol to people on the road.
