The Ministry of Tourism reports significant steps were taken this month for the restoring and revitalizing of Sosua Beach in Puerto Plata. Structures that had been illegally erected within the 60-meter coastal zone were demolished and removed.
The Executive Unit for the Readecuation of Neighborhoods and Environments (URBE), under the Ministry of the Presidency, initiated a comprehensive survey and registration of 208 commercial establishments within the restricted beach zone in 2021. Prior to demolition, extensive consultations were held with local community members to understand their needs and the nature of businesses operating in the area.
This project, part of the broader Sosúa Beach Recovery and Reordering initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism, aims to restore the beach to its natural state and promote sustainable tourism.
In July 2024, the government began compensating affected business owners who agreed to relocate, and the demolition of vacant structures commenced. To date, over 30 commercial spaces have been reassigned, 20 economic compensations have been issued, and six structures have been demolished.
Additionally, authorities have identified and are currently demolishing 30 vacant structures in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and the National Environmental Protection Service (SENPA).
The restoration project is a joint effort involving URBE, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and its SENPA division, the Navy, the National Police, the Tourist Police, the Governor of Puerto Plata, and the Sosúa Municipal Government.
The project’s primary objectives are to preserve and revitalize the coastline, stimulate tourism, and boost local incomes. To achieve these goals, the government plans to relocate commercial establishments and construct two public plazas, ensuring the protection of the beach and the safety of businesses, tourists, and residents.
This initiative aligns with President Luis Abinader’s broader plan to recover and rehabilitate public spaces along Dominican coastlines, safeguarding natural resources and enhancing the quality of life for citizens.
