President Luis Abinader traveled to Puerto Rico to be present for the inauguration of Jenniffer Gonzalez Colon as governor of Puerto Rico for the next four years. It is a tradition for the Dominican President to attend the inaugural. President Abinader traveled with Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez early in the morning and returned later in the day.
Abinader was the only President to attend. El Nuevo Dia reported that Albert Bryan of the US Virgin Islands attended.
Puerto Rico’s newly sworn-in governor, Jenniffer González Colón, announced her commitment to further strengthening the relationship between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic during her administration.
Speaking at her inauguration ceremony, González Colón acknowledged the presence of Dominican President Luis Abinader and Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez.
“I am honored by the presence of President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic,” González Colón said. “I want to emphasize that Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic will continue to build on our strong economic and friendly ties, just as we have always done.”
She also highlighted the presence of Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez, further underscoring the importance of bilateral relations.
President Abinader arrived in San Juan, Puerto Rico at 9:40am on Thursday to attend the swearing-in ceremony. He was welcomed by Puerto Rico’s Secretary of State, Verónica Ferraioli.
Jenniffer González Colón is a Puerto Rican politician representing the New Progressive Party (PNP). who was serving as representative of the district at large 115th-118th Puerto Rico from 2017 to 2025 in the US House of Representatives.
On November 8, 2016, González was elected Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico, becoming the first woman and youngest person to represent Puerto Rico in the U.S. Congress since the creation of the resident commissioner of Puerto Rico seat 116 years prior in 1900.
Previously, she had served as the Mayor of San Juan from 2013 to 2021. Born on 15 May 1972, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, González Colón comes from a family of politicians. Her father, Rafael González, was a member of the New Progressive Party (PNP) and served in the Puerto Rico House of Representatives. González Colón’s background in politics and public service has been influenced by her family’s legacy, shaping her views and approach to governance.
