San Pedro de Macorís has a renovated Malecón

Those staying in the Juan Dolio area can always go shopping in San Pedro de Macoris, the nearest city, and now they can tour the just renovated San Pedro boardwalk. Take note that San Pedro is also home to the Estrellas Orientales, that is battling to be one of the two teams to play the finals in the 2024-2025 Dominican Winter Professional Baseball Championship.

President Luis Abinader was in San Pedro de Macoris on Saturday, 21 December 2024 for the official opening of the boardwalk with Tourism Minister David Collado. The project was carried out by the Committee for the Execution of Infrastructure in Tourist Zones (Ceiztur) at a cost of RD$290.5 million.

As Saturday night fell, hundreds gathered at the new malecón to enjoy artistic performances and the vibrant atmosphere. “This is truly amazing, a great place to enjoy with family and friends,” said one man, dancing along to the music.

“We’re going to celebrate here, especially when the Estrellas become champions,” added another man, a passionate supporter of the local baseball team, the Estrellas Orientales.

The renovation spans 1.84 kilometers of coastal shoreline, transforming the malecón into a linear park with a total intervention area of 60,000 square meters. The project includes new sidewalks and two large recreational areas.

One of the main areas features a business zone with nine double sales modules, restrooms, a Politur security booth, and other amenities. A second plaza offers additional recreational space, a sales module, and a photographic kiosk highlighting the region’s folklore, including the iconic guloyas, traditional dancers recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The boardwalk also boasts landscaped greenery along its entire length, with a central island and waterfront areas beautifully redesigned. Other features are a children’s play area, an outdoor gym, a universal access ramp, and new lighting.
