The Centro León, the leading cultural institution in Santiago, the country’s second-largest city, has inaugurated a new exhibition space in its Anthropological Hall. The new space, titled “Mestizaje: Encounters and Disencounters,” is part of the museum’s permanent exhibition, “Signs of Identity,” Acento reports.
The exhibition explores the complex history of the Dominican Republic, highlighting the contributions of the indigenous people, the Spanish colonizers, and the African slaves. The exhibition also examines the process of adaptation, transformation, and fusion that resulted from these encounters.
“Signs of Identity” is an ongoing project that seeks to explore the formation of Dominican national culture. The new exhibition space is the latest addition to this project.
The exhibition is divided into four sub-sections, each of which explores a different aspect of the Dominican identity. The exhibition features a variety of artifacts, including pottery, tools, and weapons. The exhibition also includes a video mapping presentation that explores the ingredients, preparation, and final presentation of a traditional sancocho.
“Mestizaje: Encounters and Disencounters” features a program of cultural animation activities, including guided tours, dialogues in the room, and conversations.
The exhibition is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 7pm at the Centro Leon’s Santiago city location — Av. 27 de Febrero 146. Admission is free on Tuesdays.
The opening ceremony was led by Dr. María Amalia León, president of the Eduardo León Jimenes Foundation and the Centro León; José Mármol, executive vice president of Corporate Communications, at Banco Popular; María Elena Aguayo, executive director of the Eduardo León Jimenes Foundation; María Luisa Asilis, executive director of the Centro León; Luis Felipe Rodríguez, manager of Cultural Programs; and Sara Hermann Morera, chief curator.
The opening ceremony featured a surprise performance by Maridalia Hernández, who sang her song “Caribe.” The song reminded the audience of who they are and the cultural region to which they belong.
