Restrictions coming for Winston Churchill and other avenues

The National Institute for Traffic and Transportation (Intrant) is in the final phase of ending left turns from Av. Winston Churchill onto Av 27 de Febrero in the capital city. The move would be made to relieve congestion on the street, Diario Libre reports.

Going south on Av. Winston Churchill, drivers will need to cross the 27 of February and continue two streets to the intersection of Av. Sarasota with Av. Jimenez Moya (as the Churchill is renamed at that more southern point). At present, drivers have the option of doing a U-turn at the Av. 27 de Febrero intersection, to then take an eastbound street to Av. Abraham Lincoln to take the Av. 27 de Febrero in the eastbound direction. It is not clear if this U-turn will continue to be allowed.

Although the traffic lights have yet to be re-programmed, the signage referring to left turns has been covered up with black plastic bags.

At yet another very busy intersection, the Intrant has covered the signage allowing a left turn from the Av. John F Kennedy Avenue onto Av. Abraham Lincoln. As expected, drivers will only be able to turn right (northbound) at that intersection.

Last year, left turns from Av. 27 de Febrero onto Av. Maximo Gomez were eliminated, and this measure greatly upset many drivers.

The Intrant has yet to make the corresponding announcements for the road direction changes.

Diario Libre reports that the change follows recommendations of a multi-institutional committee made up by the Ministry of Public Works, the National District City Government (ADN) and the Transport and Transit Security Agency (Digesett).

Back in 2021, then-Intrant director Hugo Beras tried to make Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln avenues one-way, with Churchill going north and Lincoln going south. According to Beras, this would provide a 72% improvement in traffic flows. Left turns are already prohibited at most of the intersections on Churchill.
