Mario Vargas Llosa passes away at 89 years old

Mario Vargas Llosa, the renowned Peruvian writer and Nobel laureate, passed away on 13 April 2025 in Lima, Peru. He was a Peruvian, Spanish and Dominican citizen (2023).

In his writing, Vargas Llosa has reflected on aspects of Latin American politics and history, including those of the Dominican Republic.

One of the most significant references to the country comes in his novel “The Feast of the Goat” (La Fiesta del Chivo), published in 2000. The novel is set in the Dominican Republic during the final days of the Trujillo dictatorship, focusing on the political repression and the atmosphere of fear and cruelty under Rafael Trujillo’s regime. Although the novel is a work of fiction, it draws heavily on real historical events and the dictatorship’s impact on the people of the Dominican Republic.
