President Luis Abinader has traveled to Nice, France to attend the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), scheduled for 8-10 June 2025. The event, hosted by the United Nations focuses on advancing sustainable ocean governance, climate resilience, and the protection of marine ecosystems.

The UN Ocean Conference follows the 2023 report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which warned of irreversible damage to marine ecosystems without urgent action. Abinader’s participation underscores the Dominican Republic’s commitment to global environmental stewardship, as the nation faces rising threats from coastal erosion and overfishing.

When in France, Abinader will hold a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, 9 June at 3:55pm at the Palais des Rois Sardes in Nice. The discussion is expected to cover climate change, trade, and regional security, reflecting the strategic partnership between the two nations. The issue of Haiti most likely will also be touched upon.

Previously, President Luis Abinader, accompanied by First Lady Raquel Arbaje, attended a special dinner hosted by President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte in Nice.

The Presidency reported that President Abinader held a bilateral meeting with the King of Jordan Abdalá II bin Al Hussein.

Next, Abinader heads to meetings at the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland. The meetings come at a time when locally there is a focus on the labor issue regarding Haitian migration in the DR.

Apparently, Abinader is the first Dominican head of state to be invited to the ILO event, the High-Level Meeting of the Global Coalition for Social Justice, where he will be the keynote speaker at the Palais de Nations. The Presidency reports that the speech will highlight the Abinader administration’s efforts to strengthen tripartite dialogue—engaging governments, employers, and workers—to advance social justice and labor rights.

During his stay in Geneva, Abinader will hold bilateral meetings with international stakeholders, including representatives from the European Union and global labor organizations. The trip comes amid growing global scrutiny of labor practices in developing nations, with the ILO emphasizing the need for inclusive economic policies

After his business in Europe is finished, the President will head to Brasilia, Brazil on 12 June to attend the Brazil-Caribbean Summit hosted by Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Friday and Saturday, 13-14 June.

The Brazil-Caribbean Summit is part of a broader initiative by Lula’s administration to reinvigorate South-South cooperation, with the Dominican Republic playing a pivotal role in regional trade and climate resilience. The summit is described as a key platform for strengthening economic and security ties between Brazil and Caribbean nations and will address issues such as trade integration, climate vulnerability, and regional security. Abinader’s presence highlights the Dominican Republic’s strategic role in hemispheric diplomacy, particularly amid rising tensions over migration and environmental challenges. The summit is expected to take a look at the situation in Haiti.
