JCE approves ruling for non-sentenced prisoners to be able to vote in presidential election

The institutions responsible for the prison system need to provide the JCE with an official list of the citizens who meet the requirements to vote in the presidential election on 19 May 2024.

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) approved on 7 December 2023 the rules for jailed yet not sentenced persons to vote in the 2024 presidential elections in the Dominican Republic.

The JCE requires that the person have an updated identity and voting card and be on a specific electoral roll provided by the jails.

The pilot program this year will be carried out in jails under the new penitentiary model and at the prisons of Nagua, Azua and Salcedo, where voting precincts will be set up.

Regarding the Penitentiary Electoral Voting Stations (CEP), the JCE established that voting stations will be installed in the precincts where inmates will be identified with a special codification corresponding to the electoral boundary of the municipality where the center is located.

The Regulations for the Implementation of Voting in Prisons establishes that the political parties or alliances presenting candidacies at the presidential level shall be entitled to the accreditation of political delegates in the correctional facilities with their corresponding CEP.

Voting will occur during special hours from 2pm to 5pm, after which votes will be counted.

On 19 May 2024, presidential, senatorial and deputy elections will be held in the Dominican Republic.

In the event that no candidate obtains the necessary votes in the first round of the presidential election, there will be a run-off election on 30 June 2023 if no single candidate reaches 50% + 1 of the vote.
