The National Congress of the Dominican Republic costs tax payers billions. The performance of the legislators, nevertheless, has little to show for the high cost.
Listin Diario reports that the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) majority Congress was only able to pass one bill for the second half term of the year.
The legislature ended on Thursday, 12 January 2024, with the legislators resuming work on 27 Februrary 2024.
Given this is an electoral year where legislators give high priority to partisan political concerns, expectations are low for the legislators to concentrate on the work they were elected for – to draft and pass bills for the collective good.
