Fewer contracts for foreign workers

Although accurate figures are hard to come by, there has been a sharp drop in the number of contracts awarded to workers from outside of the Dominican Republic. The numbers quoted by Labor ministry official, Washington Gonz?lez, include workers that have legal permission to work in the country, as opposed to the estimated thousands of undocumented workers, mainly unskilled Haitians, who work in sectors such as the construction industry, agricultural and domestic service. The number of contracts awarded in 2002 was just 257, in contrast to 645 in 2001, and were given mainly to workers from Canada, Spain and Colombia. Male workers received 77% of these jobs, leaving 23% to female workers. As well as the business and service sectors, the financial sector is a major employer of foreign workers, for example, many specialists from overseas have been brought in to work on the new private pension schemes (AFPs).
