El Caribe provides a welcome contrast to so many stories of filthy, crime- ridden barrios with a glowing report from Los Manguitos, a poor barrio in the capital where the streets are clean, crime is rare and tranquility rules.
Community leaders attribute the barrio?s outstanding record to its inhabitants “working together”. The community’s churches have played a large part in this, and educational campaigns have resulted in many young people joining voluntary organizations like the Red Cross and Civil Defense, as well as engaging in sports activities. The only complaint they have is that the authorities have not heeded their pleas to repair the streets. Los Manguitos is situated behind the offices of Inazucar, between Jos? Contreras and Jim?nez Moya avenues.
