The new terminal under construction at the Punta Cana International Airport, a US$100 million investment, is scheduled to go into operation in time for the winter season traffic. The Punta Cana International Airport mainly serves tourists headed to the over 40,000 hotel rooms located in the 75 km Punta Cana beach stretch.
The new terminal is scheduled for opening in November 2014. It will add 33,000 square meters to the airport that handles the highest traveler numbers in the Dominican Republic. It will have two levels and a mezzanine. The terminal will have the capacity to move 3,000 passengers per hour.
The Punta Cana International Airport is the largest airport in the Caribbean. It will have 23 ramp positions and 50 passenger check-in points. The airport will have two terminals for serving traffic mainly from the Americas, another for traffic from Europe, and a fourth for private flights, VIP travel and small airplane traffic.
While the airport mainly serves tourists headed to the east coast resorts, the excellent road connections also make the airport a practical option for travelers from Santo Domingo to travel there to catch a flight or comfortably return to the capital city on the same day.
The airport has the largest number of connections in the country, with flights to around 80 countries. In 2013, the airport served 2,597,086 arriving passengers.
