The Metropolitan Transport Authority (Amet) has established 14 control patrols the Autopista Juan Pablo II (Autopista del Nordeste), the 106-km toll road between Samana and Santo Domingo. The highway has the highest rate of fatalities per kilometer caused by auto accidents in the Dominican Republic. Pablo Arturo Pujols, Director of Amet, reminded motorists that the speed limit in the Los Haitises section is 50 km per hour, while an 80 km per hour speed limit must be observed on other stretches of the highway.
The increase in patrolling of the highway was initiated on Monday, 29 June 2015, after a second tragic accident in June that caused eight deaths. In addition, eleven motorists or passengers were killed in an accident that occurred earlier in June on this same highway. As reported by Noticias SIN, 159 persons were cited for speeding during in the first week of stepped up patrolling along the highway.
Pujols alerted motorists that patrols are stationed every 10 km along the highway to discourage speeding.
