The plant is exclusive to the Dominican Republic and carries the name of the Mirabal sisters that were killed by Dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo in 1960 when fighting for democracy and equality. The species is unique in the world and is found in the Salcedoa Scientific Reserve in the Hermanas Mirabal province.<\/p>\n<p>A board recently was appointed to monitor the Parque Lineal Juana N\u00fa\u00f1ez in Salcedo running the course of the Juana N\u00fa\u00f1ez river, the Jayao stream, the adherent forests, the Bosque de la Mujer, Ca\u00f1ada Bellaca, Lago Clavijo and old neighborhood known as Barrio El Matadero.
