The countries reject the Japanese government\u2019s argument that the annual slaughter is for scientific research and say that it is all about commercial whaling.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter signed by Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, New Zealand, Panama, Peru and Uruguay, the countries expressed their opposition to the so-called scientific whaling especially in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary that was established by the International Whaling Commission (IWC).<\/p>\n<p>Japan is a signatory to the IWC\u2019s moratorium on hunting whales.
