The ban on swimming and excursions in small and medium sized boats is still in effect on the Atlantic Coast, according to the National Meteorological Office (Onamet). The recommendations are to preserve life and property especially in areas located below sea level such as Nagua and Matancita (Mar\u00eda Trinidad S\u00e1nchez), Gaspar Hern\u00e1ndez (Espaillat), San Fernando (Montecristi), Sos\u00faa and Cabarete (Puerto Plata), where the sea could enter the towns and become dangerous.<\/p>\n

Onamet say that conditions will begin to improve from today, Wednesday 6 March, 2018 but it will not be until Thursday that a notable improvement will be seen.<\/p>\n

Dozens of restaurants and holiday homes near the beaches of Puerto Plata have been damaged by waves.<\/p>\n

The Center for Emergency Operations (COE) has said that on Monday night, 5 March 2018, some ten homes were flooded in Las Ermita and Las Canas in Gaspar Hern\u00e1ndez and around 90 residents were forced to leave their homes.
\nIn Cabarete, the streets were full of garbage thrown up by the ocean and there is also damage to the restaurants located on Cabarete beach.<\/p>\n

In Sosua, five people had to be rescued when their boat filled with water and began to sink. The incident happened yesterday morning, Tuesday, 6 March and the rescue was directed by Navy captain Hernandez Peguero who is the Naval Commander of the northern area. The tourists, whose nationality is as yet unknown, were rescued around noon.<\/p>\n
