Of these an average of 30 are interned and this is exceeding the capacity of the hospital. Parents mostly bring their children to the hospital for infections, pneumonia, gastric and chronic illnesses. The increase in demand has forced the hospital authorities to adopt new strategies and new policies to assist patients.<\/p>\n<p> According to Dr. Emilio Mena Castro, chief of the hospital, the new policies as well as the review committee that oversees each death at the hospital have contributed to reducing the mortality rate at the institution. As an example of this decrease, the doctor compared the 95 deaths at the hospital registered last March 2005 to the 50 deaths this March 2006.<\/p>\n<p> The doctor emphasized that the hospital receives the most serious cases from the south, east and southwest of the Dominican Republic.
