Wilson Mejía of the Metro operating office, Opret, explained on the Enfoque Matinal CDN talk show on Channel 37 that the speed of the trains dropped from 60-70 kph to 40 to 45 kph. The service was normalized in the afternoon, but morning commuters suffered up to two-hour delays.

The Metro train slowed down since early in the morning, during peak commuter time. At the Mamá Tingó station, in Villa Mella, the lines of people extended up to half a kilometer. Passengers had to endure delays of more than an hour to board the cars.

The passengers complained they were not told what was happening, that the staff should be trained on how to handle this type of situation. Others were concerned about arriving late for work.

The glitch coincided with the shutdown of the Santo Domingo Skylift over the Ozama River. The skylift was shut down for maintenance works on Saturday, 16 March 2019, with service scheduled to resume on 31 March 2019.

Read more in Spanish:
Listin Diario
Hoy
MetroRD

19 March 2019

Users of the Santo Domingo Metro had major problems on Monday, 18 March 2019 due to a technological failure on Line 1.
