Tejada, a noted jurist, writer, historian and leader of the first free newspaper in the Dominican Republic, is also a university professor of some note and a standing member of the Dominican Academy of History. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2 May 1861 battle was the first armed uprising against the annexation of the new Dominican Republic by Spain, engineered by dictator Pedro Santana to return the country to Spanish rule and avoid a return of Haitian domination.
