Peruvian talk show host Jaime Bayly used his Mega TV \u201cEl Observador\u201d show aired from Miami, Florida, to disclose detailed information from his sources on Venezuelans who are donating to fund the political aspirations of former President Leonel Fernandez, who seeks to return to the Presidency in 2020. He said the Venezuelans involved amassed doubtful great fortunes during the regimes of Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his talk show of 3 June 2019, Bayly named and showed photos of several Venezuelans that would have made contributions to Fernandez for around US$4 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bayly says these are billionaire Venezuelans who have purchased millionaire villas in Casa de Campo and Cap Cana and invested in major business projects in the Dominican Republic from 2004 to 2012, when Fern\u00e1ndez was President, and have continued to do so under the President Danilo Medina administration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bayly says in the Dominican Republic, the Venezuelans have found \u201csanctuaries.\u201d He said they \u201chave found the legal umbrella, the protecting blanket and discrete impunity to laundry their money.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bayly also shared photographs and names of those whom he called their accomplices in the Dominican Republic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bayly also criticized President Danilo Medina for attempting what he called the Hugo Chavez formula of reforming the constitution to stay in power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former President Leonel Fernandez replied on Tuesday, 4 June 2019 in a Tweet, calling the statements regarding his receiving millions from corrupt politicians in Venezuela by Bayly \u201cinfamy and vile slander\u201d. Fernandez emphasized that the “lies” by the journalist, whom he did not mention by name, will not be able to stop his fight \u201cin defense of the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His son, Omar Fern\u00e1ndez stated that Bayly did not provide any evidence to back his claims and said the statements are part of a \u201cdirty campaign\u201d against his father. The Fern\u00e1ndez campaign team held a press conference on Tuesday, 4 June said groups entrenched in power were behind the Bayly accusations. Former Attorney General Radham\u00e9s Jim\u00e9nez said that the attacks seek to destroy Fern\u00e1ndez\u2019s leadership to create conditions for the amending of the Constitution to clear the path for Medina to run again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fern\u00e1ndez is endeavoring to run for President again. The 2015 Constitution would enable him to seek two more presidential terms. On the other hand, it bans President Danilo Medina from running for the Presidency in 2020. But Medina followers understand they have the backing in Congress to amend the Constitution to revoke the ban. Medina is the most popular PLD politician, according to recent polls. The government is the main employer in the Dominican Republic and the government has in place extensive social programs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
